Glen “The Road Warrior” Johnson settles the score with a unanimous decision over Daniel Judah on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights
February 27th 2009 (Hollywood Florida) Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood Florida saw light heavyweight Glen “The Road Warrior” Johnson knock Daniel Judah 23- 4 (10KO’s), down with a straight right in round one en route to a hard fought convincing unanimous decision in the main event. Johnson, 40, a former light heavyweight world champion and Fighter of the Year, has won five of his last six fights. The loss was a controversial decision to Chad Dawson in April. This fight was a lot of Johnson stalking the Brooklyn based Judah and often landing his shots. Judah spent most of the night getting punched and taunting Johnson with his hands down and seldom hitting The Road Warrior Johnson. The official scores were 89 -99 and 90-99 twice
In the Co-Feature Welterweight Antwone Smith 14- 1 8 KO’s) and Norberto Gonzalez 16 – 0 (12KO’s) went to war in the first two rounds of their scheduled 8 round Co- Feature. Smith was getting rocked in the corner when he landed a straight right that floored the Mexican fighter at the end of round 2. Rounds 3 and four were very evenly matched with both fighters finding the mark but Smith showing to be a bit slicker. Round 5 had the Mexican Gonzalez firing big shots while wiping away blood from his but left eye. Smith had a big sixth round with the exception of a late round attack by a very, very tough Mexican in Gonzalez.. the crowd is in an uproar of appreciation at the bell. Smith won a unanimous decision with all three cards reading 78 – 74.
The ESPN Friday Night Fights telecast got on its way with the 2008 Olympian alternate light welterweight Danny O’Connor improving to 3-0 (1 KO) with a majority decision over Jamar Saunders 2-2-1 (1KO) fighting out of Atlanta. O’Conner who boasted a 95-8 record as an amateur, put his punches together well throughout the fight often landing heavy right hooks and straight left hands. No punch however was heavy enough to put Saunders down. The score cards read 38 -38 and 40-36 x 3
Russian heavyweight, Magomed Abdusalamov 3 -0 (KO 3,) impressed with a huge 1st round knockout in the opening bout of the evening. Abdusalamov, fighting for the first time in the United States, dropped Maurice “The Southern Solider” Winslow 3-8 3KO, with a huge right hook early on. Winslow beat the count but was caught with two hard shots before the referee Tommy Kimmons stepped in at 1:13 of the opening round. Abdusalamov, now fighting out of the Warriors Boxing stable and with John David Jackson in his corner was the Russian Amateur champion who won all of his amateur fights by knock out. And he keeps his knock out streak intact! Great way to get the night started!
In the second undercard bout, Welterweight Habib Allahverdiev 9 -0 (4KO), from Moscow scored a knockout in the first round over Richard Pitt, 3 -8. Abdusalamov is another new Warrior fighter and the former Russian amateur champion. He was 2 for 2 with left hook body shots; both dropped the game Pitt early. A straight right about 60 seconds later dropped the Bahamian Pitt for the third and final time at 2:19 of round 1.
Cuban heavyweight Henry Fuentes, 8 -0 (5 KO’s) ended his night early at 2:03 of the third round with a TKO over Samuel Brown 4 – 5 1KO. The Cuban Southpaw dropped SGT 1st Class Brown fighting out of Kentucky, twice, once with a left uppercut midway through the third and another with a straight left. Brown had a competitive first round with an early big right hand and controlled boxing, but it went the Cubans way from round two on. Fuentes was a Greco-Roman wrestler in the Cuban National Wrestling team and had no previous experience in boxing as an amateur or pro.
In an extremely entertaining bout Super middleweight and Miami favorite Eli Augustama 3- 0 (2KO) and William Deets got it!! The first round the two fighters felt each other out. Augustama landed great uppercuts and hooks and a overhand rights to finish round 2. Rounds 3 and 4 were even exchanges of power punches, sips, slides bombs and hooks. Augustama squeaked by with a majority decision d the cards reading 39- 37 twice and 38–38.
Notable boxers in attendance were Frankie “El Gato” Figueroa, Randall Bailey, Kassim Ouma, Jameel McCline, John David Jackson, Juan Urango, Jermaine Taylor, and former lightweight champion Nate Campbell.
Munroe retains EBU Title; Jeffries wins pro debut
The much anticipated rematch between defending champion Rendall “Two Tone” Munroe 20-1(8) against the man he deposed last March Kiko “La Sensacion” Martinez 20-2(15) took place at The Metrodome in Barnsley, Yorkshire. It pitted the clever boxer Munroe against the bull like puncher from Spain Martinez.
Things got off to an exciting start in a lively first round when both guys traded at close quarters neither man backed off. Both men were cut in the first Martinez over the right eye whilst the Southpaw champion was cut over the left eye. Neither cut ended up being a factor as they were both managed by the corners. The second saw Munroe take a step back and box more taking the round even managing a smile whilst covering up from a burst of Martinez punches. The third saw Martinez bully Munroe and take the round with a higher work rate. The fourth was closer where both men had there moments. Martinez was clearly looking to break Munroe down with body shots and that was reflected with stats of him out landing Munroe 21-9. Munroe making his fourth defence had the fight for his taking when he elected to box not stand and trade as well as out boxing his foe he actually managed to even put him on the back foot. The pattern was set and followed in the sixth and seventh. In the eighth Munroe seemed to take a breather allowing the Spaniard to push forward winning a quite round. The Leicester bin man got back on his game in the ninth continuing the trend in the tenth and eleventh. Desperate to make the ultimate statement Munroe charged out of his corner looking stop his man, though Martinez was trapped in a nutreal corner looking spent he did see the final bell.
The scores were announced 116-112, 116-113 & 118-110 all in favour of Munroe. 15 rounds.com scored the fight also in favour of Munroe but by 117-112. Munroe threw 709 punches and landed 156 punches with a connect rate of 22% while his Spanish adversary Martinez threw 547 landing 102 a connect rate of 18%.
Afterwards a jubilant Munroe who still works a day job as a bin man said “I’m ready for however they put in front of me”. He maintains his humility saying “I’m back to work on Tuesday”. Proving he really is a working class hero!
The card marked the debut of Britain’s first Olympian to turn pro. Tony “Jaffa” Jeffries traded in the vest and head gear having won bronze at last summers games and stopped Aliaksandr Vayavoda 5-13-1(1) at 2.42 of the first.
Promoter Frank Maloney said afterward that Jeffries who intends to campaign at Super Middleweight will be back in April. The Sunderland fighter seems to be a real ticket selling having sold 350 tickets grossing £11,000 on his own. Not bad for a guy starting out in the middle of a recession!
A deep undercard also contained the world rated Nigerian Ajose Olusegun 26-0(13) who is based in London. Commonwealth champion Olusegan who is rated 6# by the WBC made his second defence stopping the brave but out gunned Scott Haywood 19-3(4) in a one sided beat down in the seventh.
In the third title fight of the night saw Welshman Gary “Dynamo” Buckland 15-1(5) win the Vacant Celtic Lightweight title with a career best win beating former Commonwealth champion Scotland’s Craig Docherty 22-5-1(9) via shut out 100-90.
Paul Hyland 14-1(4) won a six round decision in a Bantamweight fight against Nikita Lukin 8-17-2(2)
Also at Bantamweight Ross Burkinshaw 5-1-2(3) drew over four with Mike Robinson 4-0-1(0)
Lee Selby 3-0(0) kept his unbeaten record outpointing Craig Johnson 9-4(0) in four.
Dave Ryan 8-1(1) took Jamie Way’s 8-1(1) unbeaten record over four rounds in Light Welterweight action.
Lightweight Tyrone Nurse 6-0(0) scored a four round decision over Baz Carey 11-40-4(3)

Supreme humidity: Marquez and Juarez make weight
HOUSTON – The promotional title for tomorrow’s lightweight world championship fight between Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez and Texan Juan Diaz is “Supremacy.” Well, if it’s supremacy they’re looking to contest in town this weekend, the match is already won: Houston’s heat and humidity in February fells all challengers.
Early Friday afternoon on a black-skirted aluminum stage guarded by red Tecate signs outside the ticket window of Toyota Center, under a facinorous sun whose heat was both tempered and abetted by the gathering clouds, Marquez and Diaz each made weight for Saturday’s scrap. Marquez tipped the electronic scale at 134 1/4, and Diaz made 134 1/2.
Both fighters looked excellent. Marquez was his usual combination of gently rippling abs and muscle-knotted back. Diaz, meanwhile, looked tighter than normal round his belly – with increased definition in his shoulders. When the fighters made their customary stare-down, with Bernard Hopkins supervising on stage, Marquez appeared to have an inch or more height advantage.
Next on the scale were WBA featherweight champion Chris John and Houstonian Rocky Juarez, the two men who will fight in Saturday’s co-main event. Each easily made weight with John coming in at 125 1/4 and Juarez making 125 1/2. Though John had the more tapered physique, Juarez appeared both more muscular and more defined than he’d looked in his last title fight – a November 2007 loss to Marquez.
Also making an appearance – his first public sighting since Manny Pacquiao beat him in December – was Oscar De La Hoya. The “Golden Boy” looked a bit above the weight at which he’d fought Pacquiao. He also looked a bit sheepish. Both the gregarious waving and raucous crowd reaction were gone, Friday, as De La Hoya partially emerged from between matchmaker Eric Gomez and partner Hopkins, gave a quick greeting and then receded to a corner of the stage.
Toyota Center doors open tomorrow evening at 5:30 CT, with the live “HBO Championship Boxing” broadcast scheduled to begin at 9:00. 15rounds.com will have full ringside coverage of the entire nine-fight card.
