LENIN ARROYO LATEST FOE FOR MIKE JONES ON AUG. 8 AT BALLY’S ATLANTIC CITY
ATLANTIC CITY, NJ—Veteran Lenin Arroyo, of Miami, FL, has stepped in to replace Ben Tackie against unbeaten Mike Jones on Saturday evening, Aug. 8, at Bally’s Atlantic City. At stake in the scheduled 10-round contest will be Jones’ world ranking and his North American Boxing Association (NABA) title. Medical issues K0d the 36-year-old Tackie , himself a late replacement for Jones’ original foe, Larry Mosley, who backed out last weekend after poison from a growth on his face got into the fighter’s bloodstream, necessitating surgery. “It’s been a frustrating year for Mike,” said Hall-of-Fame promoter J Russell Peltz. “Mosley canceled out on him in March with a back injury and Mike had to cancel out on Mosley in June with his own medical issues. In this case, the third time was not the charm. “He was looking forward to fighting Mosley, then Tackie, but it wasn’t meant to be. Mike has only boxed five rounds in the last 11 months. He needs to fight anyone who will get into the ring with him. Contenders are not exactly lining up.” Arroyo, 29, is originally from Costa Rica. Like Tackie, he has never been stopped, compiling a 20-9-1 record (4 K0s). He got off the floor in 2006 and lost by decision to ex-WBO world junior welterweight champion Randall Bailey, one of the hardest punchers around. A pro since 2002, Arroyo has beaten Angel Chacon, Ener Julio, Antonio Ramirez and Juan Carlos Rodriguez, all “fringe” contenders. Jones, 26, is one of boxing’s hottest prospects. His 17-0 record includes 15 knockouts and he won the vacant NABA title Aug. 29, 2008, when he K0d Juliano Ramos, a Brazilian living in Boc a Raton, FL, in six rounds at the New Alhambra in South Philadelphia. In his first defense last March 6, Jones was set to fight Mosley, who had to cancel out five days earlier with a back injury. Instead, Jones K0d late sub Dairo Esalas, of Miami, FL, in two rounds at the Blue Horizon in North Philadelphia. Two weeks prior to the re-scheduled fight with Mosley on June 6 at Bally’s, Jones strained the bicep on his left arm and had to cancel. A pro since 2005, Jones has beaten Doel Carrasquillo, of Lancaster, PA; Israel “Pito” Cardona, of Hartford, CT; Gilbert Venegas, of Moline, IL. Jones’ two hardest fights came last year against a pair of Chicago, IL, fighters. In his only ESPN 2 appearance March 28, 2008, Jones rallied in the last two rounds to earn an eight-round decision over Germaine Sanders at the Seneca Allegany Casino in Salamanca, NY. Then, last Dec. 5 at the Sovereign Center in Reading, PA in a fight televised by Telefutura/Univision, Jones shook off some early bombs and knocked out Luciano Perez in three rounds. Jon es is ranked No. 10 by the World Boxing Association (WBA), No. 12 by the International Boxing Federation (IBF), No. 13 by the World Boxing Organization (WBO), No. 26 by the World Boxing Council (WBC). Five preliminary fights complete the show. Tickets are priced at $50 and $75. They are on sale at the offices of Peltz Boxing Promotions, Inc. (215-765-0922) or online at www.peltzboxing.com. Tickets also can be purchased through TicketMaster (800-745-3000) or online at www.ticketmaster.com.
ANDRE WARD TO FACE SHELBY PUDWILL IN SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHT BOUT LIVE ON SHOWTIME®
Ward vs. Pudwill Joins Mikkel Kessler vs. Gusmyl Perdomo
On Special Saturday Primetime Edition of ShoBox: The New Generation
Sept. 12, 2009, at 10 p.m. ET/PT
NEW YORK (July 31, 2009)—Undefeated super middleweight Andre “S.O.G.” Ward will share the stage with his first Super Six World Boxing Classic™ opponent Mikkel “Viking Warrior” Kessler on a special Saturday primetime edition of ShoBox: The New Generation, on SHOWTIME.
Ward (19-0, 12 KOs) will tangle with Shelby Pudwill (22-3-1, 9 KOs) of McGlauglin, S.D., in a 10-round super middleweight scrap live from Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, Calif., on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
The Ward fight will air immediately following Kessler’s World Boxing Association (WBA) super middleweight mandatory title defense against No. 1 ranked Gusmyl Perdomo (16-2, 10 KOs) of Turmero, Venezuela, which will air on same day tape delay from MCH Messecenter Herning – Herning, Denmark.
“There was no way we were going to allow Mikkel Kessler to have a showcase fight preceding his Super Six showdown with Andre, and not have the viewers on SHOWTIME witness our 2004 US Olympic gold medalist in action the same night,” Ward’s promoter Dan Goossen said. “Kessler may be the champion, but Andre Ward is coming to take that title and making history.”
Goossen is referencing the Group Stage 1 matchup of Ward vs. Kessler in the celebrated Super Six World Boxing Classic, Nov. 21, 2009, live on SHOWTIME. Ward-Kessler promises to be one of the most exciting fights of the year, pitting Team USA’s only Olympic Games gold medalist from Athens 2004 against Kessler (41-1, 31 KOs), of Copenhagen, Denmark, an early favorite in the tournament.
In his last fight on Dec. 6, 2008, Pudwill, 34, beat Anthony Osbourne in Mandan, N.D., with an eighth-round knockout. Inactive in all of 2007, Pudwill suffered a loss in his fight before Osbourne to John Duddy at Madison Square Garden in 2006.
Pudwill took eight straight wins into the Duddy fight and didn’t lose for almost five years in a time-span that dated from June 2001 to March 2006.

Danny O’Connor’s House of Pain
Friday July 31- A proud Irish-American with the hopes of New England boxing fans on his shoulders, Danny O’Connor is rapidly moving up the junior welterweight ranks while introducing his opponents to his own ‘House of Pain.’
A 23-year old southpaw known for an intriguing mix of ring savvy, boxing ability and power, O’Connor was a high school wrestling champion who began his stint in the sweet science in 2004. He went on to win four New England Golden Gloves titles, a National Golden Gloves crown and even scored a dominating victory over 2008 Olympic Gold medalist Felix Diaz of the Dominican Republic. And though O’Connor would drop a hard-fought decision to Javier Molina in the 2008 Olympic trials, the 141-pounder was selected as the US team alternate and he traveled to Beijing for the 2008 Games.
Once the Olympics were over, O’Connor began on his road to glory as a professional, stopping Jose Guerrido in just two rounds on September 17th. He went on to add two more wins to his ledger as he decisioned Anthony Woods and Gregorio Jimenez in successive bouts.
In February of 2009, O’Connor made his ESPN debut, even impressing Friday Night Fights commentators Joe Tessitore and Teddy Atlas in his win over Jamar Saunders. He went on to stop Charles Wade in a single round less than a month later, and he then shutout Travis Hartman over four rounds in April, scoring two knockdowns in the process.
O’Connor’s last bout on June 27th saw him score another shutout, this one over his toughest foe to date, 30 fight veteran Sebastien Hamel. It’s just another sign that the O’Connor era is about to begin in the 140-pound weight class.
“It amazes me sometimes that he’s only 24 years old, because he shows the poise of a veteran in the ring,” says O’Connor’s promoter Leon Margules, Executive Director of Seminole Warriors Boxing. “Add in his crowd-pleasing style and charisma, and Danny’s definitely got the potential to be a star in the coming years.”

SIMMS REUNITES WITH STAR IN HOPES OF CAPTURING MIDDLEWEIGHT CROWN–SATURDAY ON GFL
On August 1st, undefeated middleweight contender, “Marvelous” Tarvis Simms (24-0-1, 11KO) will look to take one step closer to a world title opportunity, when he takes on Marcus Upshaw (11-3-1, 5KO) on the undercard of the Delvin Rodriguez vs. Isaac Hlatswhayo battle for the IBF vacant welterweight championship of the world. The card is promoted by Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing and is being held at the Mohegan Sun Resort and Casino in Uncasville, CT.

The fight will be a somewhat of a homecoming for Simms, but in more ways than just one. For starters, Simms will be fighting for just the third time in his home state of Connecticut as a professional. The Mohegan Sun in Uncasville is just a mere car ride away from Simms hometown of Norwalk and Simms expects to have a strong contingent of fans in attendance. It will also mark the rebirth of Simms relationship with promoter Joe DeGuardia of Star Boxing. Simms was formally promoted by DeGuardia before the two split back in 2005. Simms took some time away from the sport, but returned to the ring in early 2007 and has since added four more wins to his record during that time. Now the two are back together, and look to start up right where they left off.
“Tarvis was climbing up the ranks and headed towards a middleweight title shot, before the split,” stated DeGuardia. “We are not looking in the past though, only to the future, and I feel that Tarvis still is one of the top middleweights in the world, and we expect him to show that to everyone in attendance on August 1st. A few more wins and we feel that Tarvis will be ready to take on any of the top contenders, or champions in his division, but first he has to take care of the business at hand on the 1st.”
“I am excited to be back with Joe,” stated Simms. “We are going to do things right I am confident in, that as long as I do my job, Joe will do his, and it’s only a matter of time before I get my shot at one of these champions in the middleweight division. I want to thank Joe for giving me this opportunity to fight in front of my hometown fans, and promise everyone coming that they will not be disappointed in my performance on August 1st.”

JONES JR RETURNS TO ROOTS…BIG ROY UTILIZES TACTICS TOUGHT TO YOUNG ROY;BOTH NOW AGREE HE IS BACK TO HIS OLD SELF
JONES VS. LACY IN “HOOK CITY” AUGUST 15 LIVE ON PAY-PER-VIEW
California, PA (July 30, 2009) – Roy “Big Roy” Jones Sr. is spending his second consecutive camp with Roy “Captain Hook” Jones Jr. in California, PA. Alton “Coach” Merkerson, Jones Jr’s long time trainer is still in camp, but Bog Roy is there to remind “Little Roy” of the skills he learned as a kid that made him the pound-for-pound best for a decade. Roy “Captain Hook” Jones Jr. faces Jeff “Left Hook” Lacy in “Hook City” on August 15 in Biloxi, MS. The event, presented by Square Ring Promotions in association with Left Hook Promotions and Beau Rivage Resort & Casino, will be broadcast live on pay-per-view.
In Roy’s losses against Antonio Tarver and Glen Johnson and most recently Joe Calzaghe, he said he got away from the style that put him at the top of the game. He was “Holding my hands up by my face, in a defensive mode. I needed to get back to being Roy Jones, with my hands at my side, acting cocky and throwing punches from all angles.”
“It’s a lot easier to have someone around that knows from where you came, said Little Roy of Big Roy. “The only problem I will have is that it may add ten more years to my career and I don’t want to do that.”
“Roy Jones Jr. should have never lost to Joe Calzaghe,” said Big Roy. “I don’t want to take anything away from Joe, but Roy fought out of his element. He didn’t do the things he was known for. Physically he was in the best shape I had seen him in years. But he may not have trained for the occasion. You know, you don’t take snow skis to the desert. Right now he is the same old Roy. And he’s the same old knucklehead which will never change.”
Jones felt like his old self, with Big Roy’s assistance, in his last bout against Omar Sheika (KO5) on March 21 and is very excited to show more in his next bout on August 15 against Jeff “Left Hook” Lacy.
A few times a week as part of this camp’s training regimen, Big Roy has a session where he puts the fighters in a circle and calls out a series of feints, pivots, jabs and hooks. It resembles a dance or ballet practice, with Big Roy as the instructor and Roy Jr just one amongst a dozen pupils.
“You have never seen it before and you’ll never see it again,” said Big Roy. “That was just a small portion of it. Some trainers don’t know how to apply the law of physics and the law of gravity. They apply it to golf and all that stuff. Even in building with the crank going up and down and the crane turning, it’s all about that circuit and it’s the same thing in boxing.”
“They think boxing is just about brutally hitting. They don’t think about positioning. They forget about all of those tactics. They worry about getting in shape, but everybody can get in shape. You can only go so far on conditioning.”
“Roy worked really hard to get to where he was. They all said that it was natural, but that was really cheapening it. He had to work really hard, as a kid, to get those skills. I have never seen anyone else do this stuff. But I do know that Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Robinson took ballet.”
Among Big Roy’s other students was “King” Arthur Williams (IBF Cruiserweight Champion). Numerous other fighters also came to Big Roy to get ready for world title bouts. Lindell Holmes won his first world title against Frank Tate (IBF super middleweight title, January 27, 1990) after spending his first camp with Big Roy. Reggie Johnson also went to Big Roy to prepare for the WBA middleweight title clash against Stevie Collins and won his first world title (April 22, 1992). Byron Mitchell went to Big Roy for the first time to prepare for Frankie Liles and won his first world title (WBA super middleweight, KO11, June 10, 1999).
Now he is preparing Little Roy for his next challenge.
In “Hook City,” two of boxing’s dominating left hookers, 8-time world champion Roy Jones Jr. and 2-time world champion Jeff Lacy, go to battle on Saturday, August 15 at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi to determine the most powerful hooker and the NABO Light Heavyweight Champion. “ Hook City ” tickets, priced at $150, $125, $100, $75, $50 & $25 are on sale and available at the MS Coast Coliseum Box Office, all Ticketmaster locations, by calling Ticketmaster at 800.745.3000 or on-line at Ticketmaster.com.
The “Hook City” pay-per-view show, presented by Square Ring Promotions in association with Left Hook Promotions and Beau Rivage Resort & Casino, is being distributed by Square Ring Promotions, Inc. at 9:00PM ET/6:00PM PT in the United States on cable and satellite via iNDemand, TVN, DirecTV and Dish Network for a suggested retail price of $34.95, as well as on Super Channel in Canada.
Wilson shocks Huerta in one
By Ricky McKenzie (ringside(
In the main event Charles Huerta (11-1, 6KO’s) met Derrick Wilson (5-0-1, 2KO’s) in a 6 round featherweight bout at Club Nokia in Los Angeles. In a stunning upset Wilson landed a huge left hook that dropped Huerta in the first minute of the first round, giving Huerta his first loss.
The first bout of the night was a 4 round featherweight fight featuring undefeated Ronny Rios (6-0, 2KO’s) against Rodrigo Aranda (8-10-2, 2KO’s). Aranda was dropped in the 2nd and dominated throughout the fight. Rios won by unanimous decision 40-35 on all three cards.
The next bout was a 4 round heavyweight fight with local favorite Herman Binek (8-1, 6KO’s) versus Yohan Banks (2-3-1, 1KO). Binek landed the bigger shots en route to a unanimous decision 39-37 on all scorecards.
Third bout was a lightweight battle between crowd favorite and undefeated Luis Ramos Jr (12-0, 7KO’s) versus Sandra Marcos (29-20-2, 24KO’s). Marcos was dropped twice in the first and again in the 6th and final round as the referee stopped the fight with 2:01 left in the 6th.
Our next bout was a junior welterweight fight featuring Eber Luis Perez (9-13-1, 7KOs) versus Los Angeles fighter Carlos Molina (8-0, 4KO’s). Molina was the aggressor for the duration of the fight and landed huge shots in flurries which prompted the referee to stop the fight in the 4th with :21 seconds left.
In the swing bout, Ricky Lopez of Oxnard, CA (5-0, 2KO’s) met Eder Peralta (0-1, 0KO’s)who was making his pro debut. Peralta bounced around the ring and was very aggressive until he was caught with timely body shots that slowed him down. In the first back and forth fight of the night, Ricky Lopez won unanimously by somewhat of a controversial decision scoring 39-37 on all three scorecards.
