Unbeaten Tyron Woodley Hopes To Keeps Win Streak Alive When He Faces Veteran Zach ‘The Lisbon Outlaw’ Light At STRIKEFORCE Challengers in Tulsa, OK On Friday, Sept. 25
NEW YORK (August 31, 2009) – Budding superstar and two-time All-American wrestler at the University of Missouri, Tyron “T-Wood” Woodley (5-0) of St. Louis, will face his sternest test to date when he meets former Tito Ortiz protégé, Zach “The Lisbon Outlaw” Light (4-8) of Huntington Beach, Calif., in a welterweight (170 pounds) fight at the STRIKEFORCE Challengers event in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Friday, Sept. 25.
The three-round, 5-minute mixed martial arts (MMA) encounter at SpiritBank Event Center will be one of the five fights televised live on SHOWTIME.
It will be the second STRIKEFORCE start for Woodley, the 11th of 13 children raised mostly by a single mother. In an impressive debut, he registered a first round (4:20) submission (Brabo choke) of Sal Woods during the non-televised portion of the “Lawler vs. Shields” event at Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri on June 6, 2009.
A popular up-and-comer, the 5-foot-9, 27-year-old Woodley has been victorious by submission in all of his outings since turning pro on February 27, 2009. His initial two starts lasted a combined 1:57 and he has yet to hear the bell for the second round.
“I’m really excited to be fighting in the Challengers series on SHOWTIME,” he said. “Any time a major organization like STRIKEFORCE calls, you’ve got to seize the opportunity. I’m trying to break down doors.”
Before turning to MMA, the talented Woodley was Missouri’s first conference wrestling champion. He went 48-0 and won a state championship during his senior year at McCluer High in St. Louis.
So, this is a young man accustomed to winning. But he had to overcome a lot, and his teenage years were definitely a struggle after his father left the family behind when “T-Wood” was 10.
“My mom deserves credit,” said Woodley, who not only persevered but also reconciled with his Dad. “I learned a lot. Having that many people in the house with limited resources made me a better person.”
While still relatively unknown outside St. Louis, the highly regarded newcomer remains one to watch. “I continue to work hard on whatever it takes that I can incorporate into my wrestling style that will make me better,” said Woodley, who credits the birth of his son, Tyron Jr., as a turning point in his life. “I just want to improve. My goal is to look completely different every fight.
“I’m an experienced wrestler, but a baby in MMA. The most important thing is to be able to go out and compete without hesitation. If I do that, I’ll win. In MMA, I get into that zone. I’m able to block things out. Hopefully, that will become routine for me. There’s a lot more at stake every fight.
“But sometimes it doesn’t matter who’s the best; it’s who wants it the most. Good people lose all the time. To go out there and take by force what’s yours is not something you get to do in every sport.”
Light was born and raised in Lisbon, Iowa. On the comeback trail, the 5-foot-8, 35-year-old also possesses a strong wrestling pedigree and has trained with one of the biggest names in the sport.
“I moved to California with nothing but a duffle bag and ended up meeting Tito,” said Light, who hopes to shine brightly in his first appearance before a paying audience since November 11, 2008. “After getting to know me, he offered me a spot on Team Punishment.”
Tickets for the STRIKEFORCE: Challengers event, priced from $25, are on sale at SpiritBank Event Center box office, all Ticketmaster locations (800-745-3000), Ticketmaster online (www.ticketmaster.com), and STRIKEFORCE’s official website (www.strikeforce.com).
In the main event on September 25, American military hero Tim Kennedy (10-2) of Fayetteville, North Carolina will face unbeaten Zak Cummings (10-0) of Springfield, Missouri in a middleweight (185 pounds) scrap.
In a second SHOWTIME fight, K-1 legend and six-time world kickboxing champion, Ray “Sugarfoot” Sefo (1-0) of Las Vegas takes on Alabama-born Kevin “The Shaman” Jordan (11-7) in a heavyweight match.
SpiritBank Event Center doors will open at 7:15 p.m. CT for the STRIKEFORCE Challengers event and the first preliminary bout will begin at 8 p.m.
Amongst the Oklahomans scheduled to appear on the card are Tulsa rivals Travis “The Dark Knight” Calanoc (4-0) and Thomas Longacre (4-0), who will put their unbeaten records on the line against each.
The live SHOWTIME telecast, which will include up to five bouts, will begin at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).
World championship MMA promotion STRIKEFORCE will produce the event at SpiritBank Event Center along with eXtreme Fighting promoter and five-time world kickboxing champion Dale “Apollo” Cook.
STRIKEFORCE Challengers is a proving ground for up-and-coming MMA fighters. The series is designed to provide today’s top prospects with the opportunity to step-up their level of competition and demonstrate their ability in a nationally televised event.
About STRIKEFORCE
STRIKEFORCE (www.strikeforce.com <http://www.strikeforce.com/> ) is a world-class mixed martial arts cage fight promotion which, on Friday, March 10, 2006, made history with its “Shamrock vs. Gracie” event, the first sanctioned mixed martial arts fight card in California state history. Since 1995, STRIKEFORCE has been the exclusive provider of martial arts programming for ESPN and, after 12 years of success as a leading, world championship kickboxing promotion, the company unveiled its mixed martial arts series with “Shamrock vs. Gracie.” In May 2008, West Coast Productions, the parent company of STRIKEFORCE, partnered with Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment (SVS&E), an entity created in 2000 to oversee all business operation aspects of the San Jose Sharks and HP Pavilion at San Jose.
THOMPSON BOXING PRESENTS “LOCKED AND LOADED”
RISING STAR JOSESITO LOPEZ TO HEADLINE
AGAINST ANTHONY MORA
LOS ANGELES, August 31 – It’s the last big card of the summer of 2009, and Thompson Boxing Promotions is bringing out the big guns on Friday, September 11th, as hot prospects Josesito Lopez, Patrick Lopez, Daniel Hernandez, Aaron Garcia, and Jesus Hernandez all return to action at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, California, and they’re going to be “Locked and Loaded” for another night of exciting world-class boxing.
Tickets for “Locked and Loaded”, a six bout card of professional boxing presented by Thompson Boxing Promotions, are priced at $75, $45 and $30, and may be purchased by calling 714-935-0900.
In the eight round main event, hot junior welterweight prospect Josesito Lopez (25-3, 14 KOs) will return to action against always tough Anthony Mora (15-3, 10 KOs). Riverside’s Lopez has won three in a row since his controversial loss to Edgar Santana in 2008, and he is ready for another assault on the 140-pound elite. A Colorado native known as “The Matrix”, Mora has been in the ring with former world champion Randall Bailey, and he is eager to have the opportunity to start at new winning streak against Lopez.
In other action, junior welterweights Patrick “El Elegante” Lopez (15-2, 10 KOs) of Venezuela and Nelson Lara (15-2-2, 8 KOs) of Costa Rica will clash in an eight round battle, and with a combined 14 wins in their last 16 bouts, this one has the potential to steal the show this September.
That’s also the case in the eight round featherweight rematch between San Diego’s Aaron Garcia (9-1-1, 2 KOs) and Huntington Park’s Jesus “Pollo” Hernandez (8-0-1, 2 KOs). On June 12th, the two California standouts battled to a six round draw, and on September 11th they get the opportunity to settle their score.
South Gate lightweight Daniel “El Travieso” Hernandez (7-0, 4 KOs) steps back between the ropes as well on this talent-rich night, putting his undefeated record on the line against hard-nosed veteran Jose Alfredo Lugo (10-10-1, 5 KOs) of Los Mochis, Mexico.
Opening the “Locked and Loaded” event is a six round junior welterweight contest between Costa Mesa’s Raul Franco (22-6, 15 KOs) and Los Angeles’ Sergio Macias (14-17, 6 KOs).
Ivan Calderon fighting for all-time best pure boxer legacy
Calderon-Mayol II, Martinez-Rodriguez world title fights Sept. 12 PPV live from San Juan
HOBOKEN, N.J. (August 31, 2009) – WBO light flyweight champion Ivan “Iron Boy” Calderon (32-0-1, 6 KOs), also The Ring magazine’s titlist, defends both belts September 12 against No. 1 contender Rodel “Kid Rapido” Mayol (25-3-1, 19 KOs) in the 12-round main event headlining the “Undefeated Champions” pay per view event, airing live in the United States from the Coliseum of Puerto Rico in San Juan.
WBO super featherweight title-holder Roman “Rocky” Martinez (22-0-1, 13 KOs) makes his first title defense in the 12-round co-feature WBO No. 9 rated Vincente Martin “El Mono” Rodriguez (25-2-1, 13 KOs).
“Undefeated Champions” is being distributed in the United States by Integrated Sports for live viewing at 9 PM/ET – 6 PM/PT on cable and satellite pay-per-view via iN Demand and DirecTV for a suggested retail price of only $29.95.
Calderon-Mayol is a rematch of a brawl this past June held in Madison Square Garden that ended in a six-round technical draw because Ivan was unable to continue due to a cut from an accidental head butt he suffered in the fourth round.
“The fight at the time of the stoppage was very tight,” Calderon said from training camp in Puerto Rico. “I started very slow but, between rounds, I was getting my rhythm. The fight was my first in Madison Square Garden and I felt pressure to look good and put on a good performance. Mayol has fast hands. He came to box, not to try for a knockout like everybody else. He’s one of the best fighters in the world right now in the 108-pound division.
“Fans can always expect from me to hit and not be hit. I am the best pure boxer in the business and I need to do that to win this fight. I want to unify my title with the other champions – Edgar Sosa (WBC), Brian Viloria (IBF) and Giovanni Segura (WBA) – and then try and move up to 112 pounds to become world champion in three divisions and retire undefeated. I want everybody to remember me as the best pure fighter in the world and a champion who helps his people.”
The “Unbeaten Champions” PPV card, presented by PR Best Boxing Promotions, Inc., also include a 10-round super flyweight bout between Juan “Panterita” Mercedes (23-2, 16 KOs) and Jesus “Changa” Martinez (18-6, 11 KOs), as well as unbeaten cruiserweight prospect Carlos Negron (3-0, 3 KOs), 2008 Puerto Rican Olympian, against Larry Carter (3-4-1, 3 KOs).

Randall Bailey to move to Welterweight
August 31, 2009) In one of the best title fights in recent memory, Randall Bailey fell just short in his bid to wrangle the IBF junior welterweight title from Juan Urango on the ESPN2 Friday Night Fights season finale last Friday. However, after putting Urango on his back with a pulverizing straight right hand in the sixth round, he left little doubt that even at 34 years old, he remains one of boxing’s premiere punchers. Now, after over a decade of fighting at the 140-lb. limit and recently struggling to make weight, Bailey is ready for a change and a move up the welterweight division.
“I have been fighting at 140 since I was a teenager,” said Bailey. “I know that at welterweight I will be bigger, even stronger, and when I put an opponent on the deck, they won’t get up.”
In his years fighting at junior welterweight, Bailey certainly left his mark. He won the WBO title in 1999 with a first round knockout of reigning champion Carlos Gonzalez and defended it twice – both times via knockout. During his time spent there, almost no fighter was immune to his power, given that 35 of his 39 wins came as the result of a knockout.
Despite the loss to Urango in what he has decided will be his ultimate bout at junior welterweight, Bailey showed he can still compete with the very best, and put on as exciting a show as any fighter in any weight class. And Bailey’s promoter Lou DiBella is excited to steer him to a title opportunity at this new weight class.
“If the fight proved anything it is that Randall Bailey is unquestionably one of the biggest punchers in boxing,” said DiBella. “We believe his right hand is a threat to anyone fighting at welterweight. Congratulations to ESPN2 for a great show and to Seminole Warriors Boxing and Juan Urango for a great win. Now it is time to see what Randall can do when making weight is not an issue.”
VIP BOXING RETURNS:SEPTEMBER 30TH RUSSO’S ON THE BAY
On Wednesday September 30th, Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing returns to the elegant Russo’s On The Bay in Howard Beach, NY to present its second installment of VIP Boxing.

VIP Boxing II will be headlined by Star Boxing’s heavyweight prospect “Devastatin” Devin Vargas (17-1, 7KO) taking on New Jersey’s own Terrell “Baby Bull” Nelson (8-8, 5KO) in an eight round heavyweight attraction.
The 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Captain, Vargas is an exciting fighter, who likes to throw lots of punches. The only blemish on the Ohio native’s record came in his last fight on May 15th against fellow Star Boxing stable-mate, and who many boxing insiders consider to be the top heavyweight prospect in the world, undefeated Kevin “Kingpin” Johnson (22-0-1, 9KO). The fight was telecast live on ESPN2’s popular “Friday Night Fights” series.
Vargas was doing very well against one of the most elite boxers in the world (Johnson) until suffering a perforated ear drum midway through the fight. The perforated ear drum not only caused extreme pain for Vargas but it also caused him to lose all of his hearing in his right ear during the fight. Unfortunately Vargas came up on the short end that night. Although Vargas lost, he still showed the boxing world that he has tremendous talent. A win over Nelson, who has been in with the likes of current WBA heavyweight champion Nicolai Valuev, and heavyweight contenders Vinny Maddalone and Albert Sosnowski, will put Vargas right back on track to make a charge towards the elite of the heavyweight division.
“We are very excited to be returning to Russo’s On The Bay for our second installment of VIP Boxing,” stated Joe DeGuardia, CEO and President of Star Boxing. “We had such a positive response from our first show there in April we just couldn’t wait to bring boxing back to this beautiful venue again. We are putting together a very exciting undercard, headlined by what promises to be an exciting heavyweight match-up that you won’t want to miss.”
“The first event that Star Boxing did here at Russo’s was such a huge success, we just knew we had to have them put on another show,” stated Frank Russo III. “Our guests have been anxiously awaiting and asking when the next show will be for some time now. We are all very excited and expect another fantastic event come September 30th.”
The show will kick off at 7PM sharp with an hour long cocktail reception. Immediately following the reception, a four course elegant dinner will start being served, at which time the first bout will go on. There will be cocktail service throughout, with an open bar running for the remainder of the evenings fights.

A complete list of undercard bouts will be announced shortly. All seats will include full VIP services. Tables of ten are available for purchase for $1500 (Bronze), $2500 (Silver), and $3500 (Gold) respectively. There will be a limited amount of individual seats at select tables available, with the cost for each seat at $150, $250, and $350. You may contact Star Boxing for tickets at 718-823-2000 or by visiting www.starboxing.com. Russo’s On The Bay is located at 162-45 Cross Bay Blvd, Howard Beach, NY 11414.
