For mixed martial arts fighter Colton Toombs, the giant elephant is his father, professional wrestling legend “Rowdy” Roddy Piper.

David Bollea’s giant elephant is his uncle Hulk Hogan, another professional wrestling legend.

The two young mixed martial arts fighters get hounded by questions regarding their relatives wherever they go.

It isn’t that they hate being asked those questions, they even welcome answering them, but both are trying to make names for themselves as fighters.

“The questions are always asked,” Toombs said. “My father is an icon, but it isn’t something that is on my mind. I love my dad, but give me a couple of years and people will know my name.”

Bollea said he understands promoters need to do whatever it takes to sell their product, and if letting people know he is Hulk Hogan’s nephew, then he has no issues with that.

“It is cool to get this kind of attention,” Bollea said. “I get paid more and people want to do more interviews with me. Promoters want to set up weird fights and sideshows and I understand that. But that isn’t the direction I want to take my career. It isn’t where I want to go.”

Toombs and Bollea will each compete in seperate bouts tonight at Tachi Palace Fights 3 “Champions Collide” at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino in Lemoore.

“Although both fighters have big names that everybody knows, both are excellent athletes,” said Jeremy Luchau, Tachi Palace entertainment coordinator. “They each want to make their own name. Both guys can fight.”

Toombs, who has a 4-0 amateur MMA record, will make his professional debut in a 145-pound bout against Fresno’s Art Becerra (0-1).

And Bollea (1-0) will look to stay undefeated when he takes on Hanford’s Tim Denham (0-1) in a catch weight of 160 pounds.

All four fighters made weight at Wednesday night’s weigh-ins.

Luchau and Tachi Palace Fights matchmaker Richard Goodman hope to match the two fighters up against each other somewhere down the road.
