Maidana stops Cayo in six from Body Shot
Marcos Maidana retained the WBA “Interim” Super Lightweight title with a sixth round stoppage over previously undefeated Victor Cayo at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
The bout was competitive over the first four rounds as each guy accomplished what they set out to do. In Cayo’s case it was to move in and out and mix it up when need be while Maidana was looking and at times imposed his will on Cayo.
At the end of round two, Maidana landed a left to the top of the head just as the bell sounded that put Cayo on the canvas. Replays showed that the punch may have come a split second afher the round finished but was still was ruled a knockdown by referee Joe Cortez.
Round five saw the most action with fighters having success with Cayo landing the flurries and Maidana landing the hard shots.
In round six, Maidna landed a good right hand that was followed up by a right to the body that sent Cayo down to the canvas for Cortez ten count at the 1:38 mark of thr round.
Maidana, 140 lbs of Santa Fe, Argentina is now 28-1 with twenty-seven knockouts. Cayo, 140 lbs of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic loses for the first time and is 24-1.
Joan Guzman made amends (sort of) for his poor performance last November when he was bludgeoned by Ali Funeka only to get a gift draw. This time Guzman showed the skills that many boxing insider praised throughout the last half decade as Guzman defeated Funeka by split decision in a fight that was tainted by Guzman’s in ability to make the weight for the bout which originally to be contested for the IBF Lightweight title.
Guzman showed his elusiveness early by showing lightning handspeed and reflexes as he would make Funeka miss and then make him pay. Funeka came forward to throw more then 250 more punches then did Guzman and had some success as he pressed the action but Guzman was efficient was his countering and body punching.
In round six, Guzman landed a huge right to the top of the head that sent Funeka to the canvas. Funeka had some moments going down the stretch but they werent enough as Guzman was very consitant with his combinations and movement.
Guzman won by scores of 116-111 and 114-113 while Funeka took a card by a 114-113 tally.
Guzman was unable to compter for the IBF crown as he weighed in a staggering NINE pounds overweight at Fridays weigh-in. After a financial deal with Funeka’s camp, the fight went on. Guzman, 144 lbs of Brooklyn, NY remains undefeated at 30-0-1. Funeka, 135 lbs of East London, South Africa is now 30-3-3.

A thrill a second fighter with dynamite in his fists, Buenos Aires’ Marcos “Chino” Maidana (27-1, 26 KO’s) emerged on the international scene in 2009 with a devastating display of power and intensity. In June of last year, the 26-year old stunned boxing observers with his sixth round stoppage of highly-regarded “Vicious” Victor Ortiz in a Fight of the Year candidate, winning the interim WBA junior welterweight title in the process. Five months later, he defended the crown for the first time with a third round knockout of William Gonzalez, and on March 27, he looks to add to his impressive KO percentage (96.2%) when he takes on Victor Manuel Cayo.
Santo Domingo’s Victor Manuel Cayo (24-0, 16 KOs) has steadily progressed through the 140-pound ranks, building a reputation as an impressive boxer-puncher who has ’star’ written all over him. Winner of three regional titles in less than four years as a pro, and owner of victories over Julio “The Kid” Diaz, Noe “Platanito” Bolanos, and Arturo “Silencioso” Morua. The 25-year-old Cayo is coming off of a third round TKO of previously unbeaten Julio Reyes last December, and he is more than ready for his chance to shine in the world championship spotlight.
A huge lightweight at 6 foot 1, Ali Funeka (30-2-3, 25 KOs) is a tough matchup for anyone he faces…just ask Nate Campbell and Joan Guzman, who Funeka took to the brink in their bouts with him. Owner of a fourth round knockout of Zahir Raheem in July of 2008, South Africa’s Funeka has impressed United States observers with his busy style and poise under pressure. Now, following a November 28 draw against Guzman, all the 31-year old wants to do is win a world title to bring back home to his fans in East London. He gets that chance once again on March 27 in his highly-anticipated rematch against Guzman.
Perhaps the greatest fighter to ever come out of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo’s Joan “Little Tyson” Guzman (29-0-1, 17 KOs) is also one of the premier boxers of this era. A former junior featherweight and junior lightweight world champion, the 33-year old Guzman is unbeaten in his third weight class and looking to become a three division world champion by defeating Funeka.
A full slate of exciting undercard bouts will be announced shortly.

“FUNEKA DIDN’T EVEN GET KISSED!” – Gary Shaw
EXHIBIT A! HBO and HBO2 to Replay Funeka vs. Guzman This Week! on Sunday, Monday & Tuesday Funeka Co-Promoter Gary Shaw Available for Telephone Interviews
QUÉBEC CITY (November 29, 2009) — ALI FUNEKA. He came. He saw. He conquered. And then he got hosed . . . by two International Boxing Federation (IBF) judges, Saturday night at the Pepsi Coliseum in Québec City, Québec, Canada.
Top-rated lightweight contender Funeka, who battered undefeated two-division world champion Joan Guzman from pillar to post during their 12-round rumble for the vacant IBF lightweight title, received a Royal Canadian Mounting, coming away with a Majority Draw. Joseph Pasquale scored it 116-112 for Funeka while judges Alan Davis and Benoit Roussel scored it 114-114. Harold Lederman, HBO’s unofficial judge, also had Funeka winning by a comfortable margin.
“Let me put it to you this way, Ali got screwed and he didn’t even get kissed,” said an irate GARY SHAW, Funeka’s co-promoter, who watched the fight from ringside. ”Ali got robbed. As one reporter told me, ‘…this decision was so bad it made the Diaz-Malignaggi decision look legitimate.’ This may be the worst decision since Lewis-Holyfield I and it needs to be addressed with a formal investigation by the IBF and Interpol. I implore the Promoters Association to issue a formal statement in support of such an investigation. At the very least, the IBF should make Funeka its interim lightweight champion so that no matter who he fights next, it’s world title fight. We must stop robbing fighters, sending them home with nothing but shattered dreams instead of the rewards they earned in the ring.”
That is the consensus of spectators, viewers, media and the HBO Boxing After Dark broadcast team which broadcast the fight live. A decision that was “…curious and absurd,” said HBO Boxing After Dark blow-by-blow announcer Bob Papa at the end of the telecast.
HBO WILL REPLAY THE FIGHT THIS WEEK! SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 29, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 30 and TUESDAY, DECEMBER 1:
HBO: Nov. 29 (8:45 a.m. ET/PT) & Nov. 30 (11:40 p.m. ET/PT)

Bute stops Andrade in four in rematch ; Funeka and Guzman battle to controversial draw
By Marc Abrams
Before 16,500 rabid fans at Coliseo Pepsi in Quebec City, Canada, IBF Super Middleweight champion Lucian Bute extracted revenge on a win he had thirteen months ago as he emphatically stopped the seemingly unstoppable Librado Andrade at 2:57 seconds of round four.
Bute dominated the fight as he landed the quicker combination’s and was building up a nice lead as he did in first fight. In round four, ironically Andrade was having his best round until he walked into a cruching left to the jaw that sent Andrade down to the canvas. Like a true warrior, Andrade seemed unfazed once he got to his feet and continued to press forward until a perfectly place left to the body sent Andrade on all fours and could not beat referee Benjy Esteve’s count and the bout was stopped at 2:57.
Bute of Montreal scored the satisfying victory in this rematch where in the first fight he survived a twelfth round knockdown where he was saved by a long count from referee Marlon Wright. This time it was Bute’s night and he remains undefeated at 25-0 with twenty knockouts. Andrade dropped his third attempt at a world title and is now 28-3.

Nine months after first fighting for a world championship Ali Funeka look to have captured that coveted crown as he seemingly dominated Joan Guzman in a battle for the vacant the IBF Lightweight title but somehow two judges ruled the bout even and the fight was declared a dubious draw.
Guzman started out well in the first two rounds as he worked the body of Funeka. Guzman seemed to be quicker to the punch until a cut was opened up around the right eye and nose late in that second frame. Funeka started to turn up the punch output and begin to batter Guzman around as he Guzman started to look like a bloody mess midway through the bout. In round eight, Funeka landed a flush right hand that buckled Guzman. Funeka jumped on Guzman and almost had him out before the bell rang to end the round. Guzman may have taken one more round as he was outworked in every round and on several occasions it looked like Guzman could have been taken out.
All that seemingly remained was how wide the scores would be until ring announcer Michael Buffer read 116-112 for Funeka and two judges obviously either mailed in their cards or saw another fight as they scored even 114-114.
Punch stats showed the dominance that Funeka displayed as he landed 248 of 903 to Guzman;s 163 of 490.
Funeka of South Africa is now 30-2-3. Guzman is now 29-0-1.

The mandatory bout will be a rematch of an explosive war that ended in controversy when the undefeated Bute barely survived a 12th round knockdown in the fight’s waning seconds to win a decision. East London’s rugged and hard punching Ali Funeka (30-2-2, 25 KO’s) will face a tough test in a 12 round vacant IBF lightweight world title bout against the undefeated and very experienced former Two-Time World Champion Joan Guzman (29-0, 17 KO’s) of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. ALI FUNEKA AND JOAN GUZMAN SET FOR BATTLE ON NOVEMBER 28 IN QUEBEC CITY, CANADA
IBF LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE BOUT TO BE TELEVISED ON HBO’S “BOXING AFTER DARK” TELECAST BEFORE BUTE VS. ANDRADE II
LOS ANGELES, October 23 – HBO Boxing After Dark’s historic first visit to Canada on Saturday, November 28, just got even more memorable as before Lucian Bute defends his world super middleweight title in a highly-anticipated rematch against Librado Andrade, the rugged Ali Funeka takes on two-division world champion Joan Guzman who looks to win his third world title in a 12 round bout for the vacant IBF lightweight title.
“Everyone knows what a great fight Bute vs. Andrade II is and now we’ve got an equally intriguing co-main event with Funeka and Guzman,” said Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions. “Guzman has long been established as one of boxing’s best, but Funeka is a rising star who will make Joan fight every minute of every round. This is a fight that could steal the show on November 28.”
“We are extremely proud to be bringing two world title bouts to Quebec City,” said Jean Bedard, president of Groupe Sportscene/ InterBox. “Thanks to our partners, Golden Boy Promotions and HBO, as this will be without question one of the biggest boxing events in Canadian history.”
Bute vs. Andrade II is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and InterBox, with Funeka vs. Guzman being presented in association with Gary Shaw Productions and Cedric Kushner’s Gotham Boxing. Both bouts will be held at the Colisee Pepsi in Quebec City, Canada and will air live on HBO’s Boxing After Dark beginning at 10:00pm ET/PT.
East London’s Ali Funeka (30-2-2, 25 KO’s) built a well-earned reputation back home in South Africa with his imposing 6 foot 1 frame, exciting style and punching power. Yet despite his victories over world-class opposition such as Zahir Raheem, it was his 12 round battle with Nate Campbell in February that truly showed the world what Funeka could do. Despite losing the bout via majority decision, Funeka stamped his name on the world map and he plans on doing it again this November against Joan Guzman.
“I respect Joan Guzman and everything he’s accomplished, but he’s too small to deal with me,” said Funeka. “I will overpower him, send him back to 130 pounds and show him how true lightweights fight.”
A 1996 Olympian with over 300 amateur wins, Joan Guzman (29-0, 17 KO’s) is widely considered to be the greatest fighter ever to hail from the Dominican Republic. It’s a distinction the 33-year-old takes seriously, as evidenced by the world titles he has held in the junior featherweight and junior lightweight divisions. The owner of victories over the likes of Javier Jauregui, former world champions Agapito Sanchez, Jorge Rodrigo “La Hiena” Barrios and current world champion Humberto Soto, Guzman will look to celebrate his 30th professional victory by winning the lightweight championship on November 28.
“This is my first fight in Canada and I’ve heard how great the fans are, so I plan on giving them a show this November,” said Guzman. “A third world title means a lot to me and I plan on leaving everything in the ring in order to take that belt home with me.”
More information on the highly-anticipated doubleheader will be announced shortly. For more information, please visit, www.goldenboypromotions.com.
