The State of the Warhammer Address – Preamble

Hello America,

This is Josh “The Warhammer” Schockman bringing you the “State of the Warhammer Address”. What exactly is the “State of the Warhammer Address” you ask, well I’ll tell you. It’s where I get on this little miracle we call the Internet and tell you just exactly what’s up according to me. So sit back, shut up, and listen up, cause I’m about to say some real ridiculous stuff. The most hilarious part is it’s all true… according to me anyway.

So I’m hanging out on the computer surfing the web after class at the gym. It’s something that I like to do on the reg, you know, to wind down and stuff. So I come to a particular web site that I frequent with a lot of MMA-related info on it and I see this article about Anderson Silva. It’s a video article with several different video segments on it from various sources. So I’m like, cool I’ll check it out and wow, some serious exaggerating going on up in here.

The first segment is from some show in Canada so automatically I know it’s garbage. I mean seriously you can’t believe anything a Canadian says unless it involves ice hockey or maple syrup. In this case neither come up so its instantly not reliable.

So they get Anderson in an interview and ask him some simple questions like, “What do you find impressive about Georges St. Pierre and B.J. Penn’s game?” Anderson’s response was, “There’s not anything in particular that’s super impressive about them. I think they are great fighters, all fighters have their strong points and their weak points.”

UFC® ANNOUNCES ANDERSON SILVA vs. DEMIAN MAIA FOR UFC 112 MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP FIGHT

SATURDAY, APRIL 10, LIVE FROM FERRARI WORLD

YAS ISLAND, ABU DHABI

Belfort Injured; Maia Steps up to Face Silva for Title Shot

Las Vegas, NV (USA) – Following a hard-fought three round win over Dan Miller at UFC 109 that showed him to be more than just a submission expert, Demian Maia will jump right back into training camp for the biggest fight of his career – an April 10th meeting with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva in the main event of UFC 112 at Ferrari World on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.

Maia replaces countryman Vitor Belfort, who underwent emergency surgery on his left shoulder earlier this week to fix a chronic injury that got worse in his training camp for Silva.

“It’s always tough when a top fighter like Vitor Belfort has to pull out of a big title fight, but we have found a high quality replacement,” said UFC President Dana White. “Top contender Chael Sonnen was not available due to injuries sustained in his fight with Nate Marquardt, so top six middleweight Demian Maia will step in to fight for the title. Maia is an Abu Dhabi grappling champion, a five-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion, and he is 12-1 in MMA and coming off a win over Dan Miller at UFC 109. Anderson Silva vs. Demian Maia will be a matchup between MMA’s best striker and MMA’s best grappler.”

A 32-year old native of Sao Paulo, Brazil who, like Silva, owns a black belt in jiu-jitsu, Maia (12-1) has won six of his seven UFC bouts, including five by submission, with four of those victories earning him Submission of the Night honors. He also holds a 2009 submission win over number one middleweight contender Chael Sonnen. In his most recent bout, at UFC 109 on February 6th, Maia went three rounds with talented New Jersey native Dan Miller and earned a near shutout unanimous decision. Now he will face the pound for pound king in Silva, who is unbeaten in ten UFC bouts and looking to add to his middleweight title defense record when he puts his belt on the line for the sixth time.

In the co-main event of UFC 112, lightweight champion BJ Penn looks to continue his dominant reign when he takes on Frankie Edgar. Also, two legends meet for the first time when future UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes battles groundfighting master Renzo Gracie.

UFC middleweight number one contender Vitor Belfort has undergone successful shoulder surgery to repair a lingering injury that was severe enough to see him withdraw from his April 10 title fight against Anderson Silva at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi.

From “The Phenom” courtesy of Sherdog.com:

“I’ve already had the surgery on my left shoulder. I’ve already had three injections since I was scheduled to fight Fedor, but lately the pain got really unbearable and my doctor decided to take an (MRI) and it showed chronic injury that was getting worse. My doctor, Michel Simoni, said that if I did not stop and do the surgery immediately, I was running serious risk of my shoulder going out of place. Also I was already losing the power of my left arm. How could I fight (without) my strongest hand? I’m feeling good, and according to the doctor, in four months I can start returning to training little by little. Now I have a long journey of work with physical therapy every day. I think before the end of the year, I’ll be back in the Octagon. No matter if it’s fighting for the belt or not, I’ll be back 100 percent.”

Belfort and Silva were initially penciled in to collide at UFC 108 earlier this year; however, minor elbow surgery for Silva postponed the Brazilian brawl until UFC 112 at the Concert Arena from Ferrari World, Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, on Saturday, April 10.

“Vitor is out its true.” And with five simple words, one of the most anticipated fights of 2010 will not take place. UFC President Dana White tweeted those words today, confirming the UFC middleweight title fight between champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva (25-4) and Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort (19-8), which was scheduled as the main event for UFC 112 on April 10 in Abu Dhabi, has been cancelled.

According to incoming reports, Belfort suffered a shoulder injury during training. Jayme Sandall, a student of Belfort, told Tatame.com, “He was training but not using the arm for a long time because of the injury, he said he’d stop for a while,” commented Sandall. “He said he’d have it scanned to know how bad it is, but I don’t talk with him for 15 days and I don’t know about the results.”

Belfort, a former UFC light heavyweight champion, returned to the UFC in 2009 with a first round TKO stoppage of Rich Franklin. It was Belfort’s first Octagon appearance in four years, after back-to-back losses to Randy Couture and Tito Ortiz in 2005.

Anderson Silva’s Muay Thai trainer breaks camp – ProMMAnow.com talks with Daniel Woirin

Brazilian MMA site Tatame.com, today reported that UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva and his Muay Thai coach, Daniel Woirin have parted ways. Woirin told Tatame in the original report,

“I thank Anderson for all the time we spent working together. He’s a champion, a born striker, but we won’t continue working together in this partnership due to lack of tune in some moments. I decided to let the way open or him to work his Muay Thai with anyone he decides”.

Because the English meaning is sometimes a little lost in translation, and also to find out what Woirin meant by a “…lack of tune in some moments,” ProMMAnow.com spoke with the Muay Thai trainer today to try and get some clarification on his split with the champ.

ProMMAnow.com: To clarify, how long did you work with Anderson Silva?
Daniel Woirin: I worked for about two years with Anderson Silva. I began my work with him when I stopped working with Lyoto Machida.

ProMMAnow.com: Obviously, it has been reported you are no longer working with him. Could you tell us why you have decided to stop working with Anderson?
Daniel Woirin: I enjoyed training Anderson for these fights, the results were positive – obviously my favorite were the first one (against James Irvin) and the last one (against Forrest Griffin) but it’s better stop now working together because we aren’t in syntony anymore.

RUMOR: Vitor Belfort Vs. Nate Marquardt in Silva’s Absence

Fighters Only is claiming to have confirmed that a bout agreement has been passed along to Vitor Belfort to meet Nate Marquardt instead of middleweight monarch Anderson Silva. This is a significant change of plans for both fighters, as Marquardt was speculated to be facing Chael Sonnen at UFC 110 in Australia.

Ed Soares, Anderson Silva’s manager, has relayed to the media that the superstar MW champion was questionable for UFC 108 due to his recent elbow surgery. After Belfort was thrust immediately into top-contender status after walloping Rich Franklin in their catchweight pairing at UFC 103, many thought the fast-tracking smacked of disrespect considering fighters like Nate Marquardt and Dan Henderson were earning their stripes with solid wins despite falling to Silva once before. Speaking to MMAFanhouse, Belfort agreed that Marquardt should be at the front of the line.

A win over Marquardt should squelch any naysayers who believe Belfort hasn’t done enough to earn a title shot. Silva’s idle status represents another of several recent setbacks for the UFC, causing the promotion to shift gears and scramble to reschedule marquee match-ups more often than ever before.

ALDO LOOKING TO FOLLOW IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF SILVA, MACHIDA

BRAZILIAN SEEKS DOMINANT REIGN AS CHAMPION

Las Vegas, NV (USA) – Newly-crowned World Extreme Cagefighting® featherweight champion Jose Aldo had dreamed of winning a world title since he was a young boy. Growing up poor in Manaus, Brazil, Aldo didn’t have many material possessions, nor did he always know when his next meal would come.

Simply put, Jose Aldo was hungry. Starving, actually. But what makes this story so unique is that Aldo’s hunger could not be fulfilled by a cheeseburger. Despite his less-than-ideal upbringing, Aldo was craving a taste of success. Aldo wanted to become an elite fighter and escape the life of poverty, leaving championship gold as his only way out.

“My dream has always been to win a world title,” Aldo said. “When I started my career, I set out to be the best. I wanted a better life for my family and for myself.”

In front of a packed house at The Pearl at the Palms in Las Vegas last Wednesday, the 23-year-old Aldo realized his dream, scoring a second round TKO victory over Mike Brown to win the WEC Featherweight Championship. In doing so, Aldo knocked off one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the sport and claimed the title he long had an appetite for. Like his fellow countrymen Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida, Jose Aldo had finally achieved his goal of becoming a world champion.

“You could see how much the title meant to Jose when he was announced as the winner,” WEC GM Reed Harris said. “Behind the devastating strikes and knockout power, Jose is actually a very emotional, humble man. To see him well up with tears was an awe-inspiring moment for me. It was a rare look at one of the most feared athletes in the sport.”

At the post-fight press conference on Nov. 18, Aldo beamed with joy as Harris announced him as the new featherweight champion. However, as Harris told the assembled media that Aldo had the potential to be as dominant as Silva and Machida, Aldo admits that his thoughts drifted back to the days in which he struggled to stay afloat. He reflected on the shortage of food, clothes, and other necessities. While Harris was gushing about his new titleholder, Aldo, at least mentally, was back in Brazil.

“It’s just nice to finally be the world champion,” Aldo said shortly after the press conference concluded. “I am so happy that my dream came true.”

As Aldo left the press conference, he handed the title belt to a member of his team and let out a huge breath of air. When asked by a WEC official how he felt, the young Brazilian offered a humorous response via his translator.

“I’m pretty hungry,” Aldo said. “I think I want a cheeseburger.”

Aldo, to no one’s surprise, is still hungry.

*VERSUS WILL RE-AIR ALDO’S CHAMPIONSHIP VICTORY TOMORROW, NOV. 24 AT 8PM ET*
