UFC 98 pre-fight drug test results come back clean from the NSAC for ‘Evans vs. Machida′

The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) has confirmed that 4 of the 22 competitors who were tested for illegal/banned substances prior to competing at UFC 98: “Evans vs. Machida″ at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 23 have all passed with flying colors.
Former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk along with Frank Edgar and former UFC welterweight champions Matt Hughes and Matt Serra were all screened for performance enhancers such as steroids, as well as drugs of abuse like cocaine and marijuana, among others.
Results of those tests all returned negative.
The fighters mentioned above were randomly selected. However, athletic commissions typically test the main card participants, as well as those who have failed tests in the past.
Sherk was suspended by the California State Athletic Commission following his July 2007 UFC title defense win over Hermes Franca, and as a result was required to test before his UFC 84 fight against B.J. Penn.
This time however, Sherk’s name was selected at random.
Pre-fight testing is designed to prevent fighters from cycling off certain banned substances as they get closer to fight night. If the threat of testing looms both before and after a fight, there is a better chance of deterring those who consider using performance enhancing drugs.
UFC 98 will feature the light heavyweight title fight between Rashad Evans and undefeated challenger Lyoto Machida. Also on the May 23 card, former UFC welterweight champions Matt Hughes and Matt Serra will finally settle their eternal grudge match.

Demian Maia vs Nate Marquardt UFC 102 fight set for Aug. 29
Middleweight standouts, Nate Marquardt (28-8-2) and Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace Demian Maia (10-0), are set to collide at UFC 102 from The Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon, on August 29, according to Maia’s official site.
Marquardt is coming off a big win over Wilson Gouveia (12-5) at UFC 95, finishing the bout in the third round via technical knockout with a thrilling combination that looked like it had been lifted from a video game.
It was impressive to say the least.
Before that he demolished Martin Kampmann, beating him at his own game (the stand up) and forcing the Dane to rethink his career at 185 pounds and make the drop to welterweight.
Maia has been impressive in his own right as of late, too.
He has remained undefeated throughout his professional mixed martial arts career, winning five straight bouts inside the Octagon and earning four “submission of the night” bonuses during that span. His list of victims includes submission victories over the likes of Chael Sonnen (21-10-1), Nate Quarry (11-3) and Jason McDonald (21-12), among others.

Strikeforce: Conference Call Quotes
Here’s a collection of quotes from yesterday’s Strikeforce conference call. Frank Shamrock, Nick Diaz and Brett Rogers talk about their upcoming fights on April 11th. It’s great to see Rogers about to get back in action. He’s a very good prospect and with some more experience I think he’s got all the tools to be a serious threat to anybody in the division.

Brunelli Late for Press Conference: Still Doesn’t Think Much of Nakash’s 17-0, 13 KO Record, Says the “O” Will Go – Exclusvely Live on GFL
Apparently, it’s easier to get to the Famous 4th Street Deli in Philadelphia from Israel than it is from Northeast Philly.
Ran Nakash, the Israeli heavyweight and cruiserweight champion, patiently and calmly waited today for local boy Dave Brunelli to show up at the pre-fight press conference to hype their April 3 fight at the Legendary Blue Horizon.
The press conference was supposed to start at noon.
Brunelli still wasn’t there at 1:00.
When the media started getting antsy, Nakash just looked at his watch, shrugged his shoulders and made a face that said ”Eh, whattayagonnado?”
While waiting, Nakash did tell Examiner.com that Brunelli’s comments about his perfect 17-0 record being padded really hadn’t phased him.
Brunelli and his team previously statned that they are unfazed about the record and as a matter of fact they believe his record is extremely padded.
“I don’t understand why I am the underdog”, said Brunelli.
“He hasn’t fought anyone.”
Murphy went on to tell www.phillykeith.com, “We love being the opponent and Nakash will feel the power.”
“I’ll be damned if I let a guy from Israel take over the Blue Horizon and on April 3rd the “0” must go.”
“I don’t have much to say about his comments,” said Nakash. “Let him talk, It’s good for promoting the fight. He’ll get the proof he needs about my ability to fight tomorrow night.”
Tonight the talking will stop and this bout has all the making of some of the great ethnic boxing matches of the past when fights between Jewish and Italian fighters were very common.
The fight will take place at the Legandary Blue Horizon in Philly and will be available on gofightlive.tv.
