Lara blows out Lee in one
Former Cuban amateur star Erislandy Lara need under one round to stop veteran Willie Lee in a Jr. Middleweight bout at the Civic Center in Monroe, Louisiana.
Lara dropped Lee with a hard one-two just moments into the contest. Lara ended things as he landed a hige uppercut and straight left that drove Lee to the ropes and he was all over Lee until referee Laurence Cole stopped the bout at 1:48 of round one.
Lara, 153 1/2 lbs of Miami is now 13-0 with eight knockouts. Lee, 152 1/4 lbs of Gulfport, MS is now 17-7
Former Cuban Olympian Yordanis Despaigne scored a ten round unanimous decision over previously built up undefeated Frank Paines.
Despaigne dominated the action and scored a knockdown in round two from a left hook. Paines tried to come forward in spots but simply doesnt have the skills to compete with the Despaigne. In round five, Despaigne was cut around his right eye from a headbutt as Despaigne crouched down into Paines head. Over the last couple rounds, Despaigne was confident enough to showboat a little as he cruised down the stretch
Despaigne, 174 1/2 lbs of Miami won by scores of 100-89;96-93 and 99-90 and is now 7-0. Paines, 171 1/4 lbs of Los Angeles is now 11-1.

Lara: Fight Me or Get out of My Division!
Regarded as one of, if not the, cream of the Cuban crop of new professional fighters, southpaw Lara has torn through his first 12 opponents impressively. But, when you have over 300 amateur fights, many against top-notch international competition, becoming a solid professional is not as lengthy a process.
27-year-old Lara was considered a favorite to medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, but attempted to defect from the Cuban amateur boxing team in July 2007, during the Pan-American games. However, before he could escape, he was arrested and returned to Cuba. Lara then successfully escaped Cuba via speedboat shortly after.
Fast, precise, always on balance, junior middleweight Lara so far seems destined for big things in boxing’s paid ranks. But ahead lays an ever-increasing level of competition in one of the sports most talented divisions.
Lara will face Gulfport, Mississippi’s “Slik” Willie Lee (17-6, 11 KOs) in a 10-round junior middleweight main event on the Wednesday, August 18 edition of ESPN2’s Wednesday Night Fights, live from the Monroe Civic Center in Monroe, Louisiana.
You are in one of the most talent-rich divisions in boxing. How far are you from being ready to challenge for a world title?
I feel that I am ready for a title right now. I have 12 professional fights and over 300 amateur fights. But we know that this is a business and some fighters have the luxury of not being forced to fight the best. I have been after Angulo, Martinez, Cintron, Bundrage, or any other champion out there that is willing to give me the opportunity. I will not let myself, my family, manager, friends and, last but not least, my fans down. But I believe that a lot of these guys are ducking me, but soon they will have no choice but to fight me or get out of my division.
Tell me about your life since leaving Cuba. Is living in the United States enjoyable to you?
Wherever you have freedom it is enjoyable. I had to escape Cuba twice just to get to the US to make my dream come true and I will not let anything stop me. I want to bring my mother from Cuba and I have lots of things I want to do in the US, but first I want to be successful in boxing to take care of my family. That is most important to me.
What do you know about your opponent, Willie Lee?
I know my opponent is a solid veteran with lots of experience. But I have also seen some flaws in him that make him vulnerable to lots of different things in my arsenal. He is also a southpaw, but I’m glad to fighting a southpaw I feel very comfortable doing so, and on the 18th everyone will see.
Experts have said that one of the biggest downfalls for the Cuban boxers is that they seem to lose some discipline once they land in America where things are more available. Are you sticking to your training regimen and keeping disciplined?
100%. Look, I believe that any person, not just a fighter, that has been locked up in captivity for as long as we have, when you get a little bit of freedom, you take it overboard. But thank God that I have been able to stay focused and learn from examples of past fighters that have made the mistake of taking their career lightly and not being disciplined. I train away from home (Miami) and have had a great training camp in Houston with Ronnie Shields. If I want to be the best, and that’s what I strive for, it’s with hard work and dedication.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
On the beach with a margarita in my hand and plenty of titles. haha. No really I see myself as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. I feel that there is no question that I will be on top of this game and for a long time. The hard work, dedication, and skills I have are a rare combination that make greatness.

Bright Lights, Lefts and Rights Returning to Monroe, Louisiana, on August 18
ESPN2 nationally televised “Battle on the Bayou” Features Future Cuban Stars Lara and Despaigne in Tough Match-ups at Monroe Civic Center
On Wednesday, August 18, at the Monroe Civic Center in Monroe, Louisiana, Keeppunching Entertainment, Warriors Boxing, and the City of Monroe will proudly present: “Battle on the Bayou” a night of world-class professional boxing to be televised live on ESPN2’s Wednesday Night Fights.
The dual main events will have a distinctly Cuban flavor as undefeated former amateur world champion Erislandy Lara (12-0, 7 KOs) and world amateur championships bronze medalist Yordanis Despaigne (6-0, 4 KOs) will make appearances in separate bouts.
In his 300+ amateur fights, Lara won three consecutive national championships at welterweight (2005-07), and was the world champion at welterweight in 2005. Despite being considered one of the favorites at welterweight for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Lara left the Cuban amateur boxing team in July 2007 during the Pan-American games in Rio de Janeiro. However, Lara was subsequently arrested and returned to Cuba. On a second attempt, Lara successfully escaped Cuba via speedboat to Mexico and turned professional in July 2008.
As an amateur, Despaigne was a member of the 2004 Cuban Olympic Team and among his 300 amateur victories, scored several over future world champions including American Andre Dirrell, Canadian Jean Pascal and Hungarian Károly Balzsay. Despaigne defected to the United States, asking for political asylum and freedom, in the spring of 2009 and made his professional debut on May 22 of the same year. As a professional, despite having just six fights, Despaigne has already beaten respected veteran Demetrius Davis and former world title challenger Richard Hall.
Lara will face Gulfport, Mississippi’s “Slik” Willie Lee (17-6, 11 KOs) in a 10-round junior middleweight bout, while Despaigne will take on undefeated Colombian power puncher Frank Paines (11-0, 10 KOs) in a 10-round middleweight showdown where someone’s “0″ must go.
“I am very excited to bring ESPN2’s weekly live boxing series to Monroe,” said event co-promoter Leon Margules of Warriors Boxing. “This is the most popular non-subscription-based cable-boxing series and a stop on the circuit belongs in a great city like Monroe, Louisiana. I want to thank the city and especially Mayor Mayo for his hospitality and innovativeness in welcoming this event. I promise boxing fans and anyone who attends this event they will not be disappointed.”
Monroe Mayor James Mayo says he shares Margules’s enthusiasm. “The city council and I are excited about the upcoming fights in Monroe. ‘The Battle on The Bayou’ will be tremendous.”
The undercard will feature several local and national prospects including once-beaten former National Amateur and All-Marine Champion Blake “Candyman” Prevost (13-1, 5 KOs); 6′ 8″ Houston, Texas, heavyweight Skip Scott (8-1, 5 KOs); Framingham, Massachusetts-based 2008 US Olympic team alternate and former US national amateur light welterweight champion Danny O’Connor (12-0, 3 KOs); and Monroe-based cruiserweight Tyrone Davis making his professional debut.
“Having Keeppunching Entertainment partner with world-class Warriors Boxing and Leon Margules to bring this type of special ESPN show to the city of Monroe, Louisiana, makes me very proud,” added co-promoter Kerry Daigle of Keeppunching Entertainment. “In my 37 years in boxing promotions I have yet to meet a city so open to this great sport and want to commend Mayor Mayo and the City Council including his staff in their incredible effort to make this show an exciting event for not only the local fans but also for the national and international fans who will watch this special segment of ESPN boxing. This will be one of the most entertaining boxing cards of the year!”
Tickets for “Battle on the Bayou” will go on sale on Wednesday, August 4, and will be priced at Ringside $40, Floor and Risers $25. General Admission seats will be priced at $15. They will be available at all Ticketmaster outlets and the Monroe Civic Center box office.

On July 9, he’ll look to notch his third win of the year.

On July 9, he hopes to send another hot prospect crashing to defeat.

Lara decisions Perez in Vegas
Cuban import, Erislandy Lara scored a ten round unanimous decision over veteran Danny Perez at the Joint at The Hard Rock in Las Vegas.
Lara boxed very well as he mixed in some solid combinations and dived them up between two, three and four punch quick flurries to bot the body and head.
Perez had a few moments of success as he used nice nice body work in round five. Lara then coasted down the stretch as he moved very well and showed terrific hand speed and put his hand together but he didint seem to take many chances as he felt he had the felt in hand.
All three judges scored the bout 99-91 for Lara, 156 lbs of Miami and is now 11-0. Perez, 155 1/2 lbs of San Diego is now 34-7.
Puerto Rican Super Featherweight prospect Carlos Velasquez stopped Ira Terry in four rounds of their scheduled eight round bout.
Velasquez was dominant with body work that set up some nice shots to the head. At the end of round three, Velasquez landed a hard straight right that had Terry in trouble. The momentum continued in the next round as Velasquez landed a big right hand that sent down Terry for referee Vic Drachulich’s ten count just twenty seconds into round four.
Velasquez, 127 1/2 lbs of Catao, PR is now 12-0 with ten knockouts. Terry, 128 lbs of Covington, TN is now 24-3.

Southpaw sensation Lara (10-0, 6 KO’s) has followed up a stellar amateur career in Cuba with the makings of a world championship run in the professional ranks. Unbeaten in 10 bouts, the 26-year-old native of Guantanamo went 7-0 with 4 knockouts in 2009, and in 2010 he’s picked up where he left off, halting veteran contender Grady Brewer in 10 rounds on Jan. 29 at The Joint. On April 2, he returns to the site of his greatest pro victory to date and hopes to make it two in a row against Perez.
Carlsbad, California’s Perez (34-6, 17 KO’s) knows all the tricks of the trade when it comes to the sweet science. The owner of five regional titles over the course of his career, Perez has faced the likes of Antonio Margarito, Jose Luis Zertuche, Grady Brewer, David Lopez and Eric Mitchell, and is looking forward to taking Lara into deep waters this April.
A member of the 2004 Puerto Rican Olympic team, Velasquez (11-0, 9 KO’s) has been tearing through the pro ranks with a mix of speed and power that has boxing insiders taking notice. The highly regarded 25-year-old Velasquez, who trains out of Las Vegas, owns wins over a series of seasoned veterans and will be put to the test once again as he looks to further cement his status of future star against an opponent to be determined.
Opponents for Sanchez, Wilder and Perez and additional undercard bouts will be announced shortly.
