A thrill a second fighter with dynamite in his fists, Buenos Aires’ Marcos “Chino” Maidana (27-1, 26 KO’s) emerged on the international scene in 2009 with a devastating display of power and intensity. In June of last year, the 26-year old stunned boxing observers with his sixth round stoppage of highly-regarded “Vicious” Victor Ortiz in a Fight of the Year candidate, winning the interim WBA junior welterweight title in the process. The 25-year-old Cayo is coming off of a third round TKO of previously unbeaten Julio Reyes last December, and he is more than ready for his chance to shine in the world championship spotlight.
A huge lightweight at 6 foot 1, Ali Funeka (30-2-3, 25 KOs) is a tough matchup for anyone he faces…just ask Nate Campbell and Joan Guzman, who Funeka took to the brink in their bouts with him. Owner of a fourth round knockout of Zahir Raheem in July of 2008, South Africa’s Funeka has impressed United States observers with his busy style and poise under pressure. Now, following a November 28 draw against Guzman, all the 31-year old wants to do is win a world title to bring back home to his fans in East London. QUÉBEC CITY (November 29, 2009) — ALI FUNEKA. He came. He saw. He conquered. And then he got hosed . . . by two International Boxing Federation (IBF) judges, Saturday night at the Pepsi Coliseum in Québec City, Québec, Canada.
Top-rated lightweight contender Funeka, who battered undefeated two-division world champion Joan Guzman from pillar to post during their 12-round rumble for the vacant IBF lightweight title, received a Royal Canadian Mounting, coming away with a Majority Draw. Joseph Pasquale scored it 116-112 for Funeka while judges Alan Davis and Benoit Roussel scored it 114-114. Harold Lederman, HBO’s unofficial judge, also had Funeka winning by a comfortable margin.
“Let me put it to you this way, Ali got screwed and he didn’t even get kissed,” said an irate GARY SHAW, Funeka’s co-promoter, who watched the fight from ringside. ”Ali got robbed. As one reporter told me, ‘…this decision was so bad it made the Diaz-Malignaggi decision look legitimate.’ This may be the worst decision since Lewis-Holyfield I and it needs to be addressed with a formal investigation by the IBF and Interpol. I implore the Promoters Association to issue a formal statement in support of such an investigation. At the very least, the IBF should make Funeka its interim lightweight champion so that no matter who he fights next, it’s world title fight. We must stop robbing fighters, sending them home with nothing but shattered dreams instead of the rewards they earned in the ring.”
That is the consensus of spectators, viewers, media and the HBO Boxing After Dark broadcast team which broadcast the fight live. A decision that was “…curious and absurd,” said HBO Boxing After Dark blow-by-blow announcer Bob Papa at the end of the telecast.

Bute stops Andrade in four in rematch ; Funeka and Guzman battle to controversial draw

Before 16,500 rabid fans at Coliseo Pepsi in Quebec City, Canada, IBF Super Middleweight champion Lucian Bute extracted revenge on a win he had thirteen months ago as he emphatically stopped the seemingly unstoppable Librado Andrade at 2:57 seconds of round four.
Bute dominated the fight as he landed the quicker combination’s and was building up a nice lead as he did in first fight. In round four, ironically Andrade was having his best round until he walked into a cruching left to the jaw that sent Andrade down to the canvas. Like a true warrior, Andrade seemed unfazed once he got to his feet and continued to press forward until a perfectly place left to the body sent Andrade on all fours and could not beat referee Benjy Esteve’s count and the bout was stopped at 2:57.
Bute of Montreal scored the satisfying victory in this rematch where in the first fight he survived a twelfth round knockdown where he was saved by a long count from referee Marlon Wright. This time it was Bute’s night and he remains undefeated at 25-0 with twenty knockouts. Andrade dropped his third attempt at a world title and is now 28-3.
Nine months after first fighting for a world championship Ali Funeka look to have captured that coveted crown as he seemingly dominated Joan Guzman in a battle for the vacant the IBF Lightweight title but somehow two judges ruled the bout even and the fight was declared a dubious draw.
Guzman started out well in the first two rounds as he worked the body of Funeka. Guzman seemed to be quicker to the punch until a cut was opened up around the right eye and nose late in that second frame. Funeka started to turn up the punch output and begin to batter Guzman around as he Guzman started to look like a bloody mess midway through the bout. In round eight, Funeka landed a flush right hand that buckled Guzman. Funeka jumped on Guzman and almost had him out before the bell rang to end the round. Guzman may have taken one more round as he was outworked in every round and on several occasions it looked like Guzman could have been taken out.
All that seemingly remained was how wide the scores would be until ring announcer Michael Buffer read 116-112 for Funeka and two judges obviously either mailed in their cards or saw another fight as they scored even 114-114.
Punch stats showed the dominance that Funeka displayed as he landed 248 of 903 to Guzman;s 163 of 490.
Funeka of South Africa is now 30-2-3. Guzman is now 29-0-1.

East London’s Ali Funeka (30-2-2, 25 KO’s) built a well-earned reputation back home in South Africa with his imposing 6 foot 1 frame, exciting style and punching power. Yet despite his victories over world-class opposition such as Zahir Raheem, it was his 12 round battle with Nate Campbell in February that truly showed the world what Funeka could do. Despite losing the bout via majority decision, Funeka stamped his name on the world map and he plans on doing it again this November against Joan Guzman.

LOS ANGELES, July 28 – Perhaps the greatest boxer to ever come out of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo’s Joan Guzman has already compiled a spectacular resume that includes a 1996 Olympic berth, 29 professional wins without a defeat and world titles in two weight classes. The 33-year-old Guzman, however, is far from done and has now enlisted Golden Boy Promotions to help lead him to a third world championship.

One of the greatest amateur boxers to ever lace up a pair of gloves, Joan “Little Tyson” Guzman (29-0, 17 KO’s) compiled an amazing 310-10 record while winning Gold Medals at the Pan American, Central American and Caribbean Games in addition to earning a spot on the 1996 Dominican Republic Olympic Team. He turned professional in 1997 and earned a reputation as a knockout artist thanks to an early 17-0 start with 13 KO’s. In August of 2002, he won his first World Title as he knocked out unbeaten Argentinean Fabio Oliva for the vacant WBO World Junior Featherweight Title. Guzman defended the title twice (including a seventh round stoppage of former World Champion and countryman Agapito “Ciclon” Sanchez) before moving up in weight. In September of 2006, he won his second world title belt by defeating Argentinean former World Champion Jorge Rodrigo “La Hiena” Barrios by decision for the WBO World Junior Lightweight title.
